Chrysler is at it again, now with the 2010 Dodge Ram 1500 Hybrid, expected out in 2010. Chrysler is already making a name for itself with the variety of fuel options available in its vehicles- diesel, HEMI, flexfuel . . . At this rate, it won’t have any conventional vehicles left in the fleet in a few years!. Now they are presenting us with the two-mode hybrid.
Chrysler has previously incorporated new design elements to the HEMI, allowing it to function either with 4 cylinders at low speeds, or V-8 when heavy loads or high speeds are needed. The addition of hybrid technology is expected to allow the HEMI to run in 4 cylinder mode more often, allowing greater fuel efficiency beyond the fuel efficiency increase common in hybrids.
The hybrid system in the 2010 Dodge Hybrid, as the name implies, will have two modes. The first mode allows the vehicle to operate just on electric power, just on gas power, or a combination of the two. The Ram hybrid can function on electric power only up to 25 mph, and the HEMI can shut down anytime the vehicle stops or decelerates, and restarts seamlessly. With the great fuel efficiency this creates, the Ram Hybrid is estimated to get around 40 miles per gallon, city driving.
The second mode uses electric assist combined with up to the full power of the HEMI V-8 as conditions demand. The second mode will normally kick in at highway speeds.
Like most hybrids, the new Ram will include regenerative braking, restoring electricity to the battery and electric motor that would normally be lost in braking or deceleration.
While details on the interior designs for the 2010 Ram Hybrid are light on the ground, it makes sense to assume that it will be very similar to the 2009 Dodge Ram, recently unveiled at the North American International Auto Show. With Dodge’s first ever crew-sized cab, and an interior maximized for comfort, the 2009 Ram, and presumably the upcoming hybrid, is perfect for a work and family car.
There doesn’t seem to be any information available on the price tag we can expect to see on the Ram Hybrid. Hybrids, of course, tend to be more expensive then conventional vehicles, but some of them are more expensive then others. Chrysler partnered with BMW and GM to design the hybrid system, so hopefully the reduced design costs will be seen at a relatively low price.
